The primary goal of Psychotherapy for the Artist is to help performing and creative artists to resolve difficulties that interfere with their lives, work and emotional health while developing and maximizing creativity and performance ability. Past and present unhealthy experiences and the unfinished conflicts they leave us with can cause negative, self-defeating feelings and behavior. These difficulties can undermine the quality of our interpersonal and creative life as well as the production and performing of our art itself. This often leaves us feeling depressed, frustrated, anxious, tired, and stuck. In addition, satisfying the desire for artistic expression is an integral part of a healthy sense of well being. When sabotaged it can lead to feelings of inadequacy, helplessness & hopelessness. The combination of self-defeating emotions and behavior, strained relationships and career difficulties along with artistic conflicts and everyday life struggles can cause feelings of being overwhelmed and become unmanageable. When these difficulties are mixed with a creative/performing arts personality and the striving for an artistic way of life it creates unique problems that are best treated with a psychotherapy approach that parallels the artistic process itself. This is why psychotherapy that includes Psychodynamic, Cognitive-Behavioral, Psychoanalytic, and Interpersonal methods is often the treatment of choice for the creative/performing crowd including a wide range of artists from Music (Bruce Springsteen) Comedy (Robin Williams, Cybil Shepherd) Writers (Pat Conroy The Prince of Tides) and Drama (Harvey Keitel). This non-directive, deep psychological work approach is based on each persons individual needs and involves resolving the underlying causes of what is interfering with our ability to thrive. Working through these difficulties not only brings a healthier interpersonal and emotional life, but deepens our understanding of the essence of human behavior which can enhance our Artistic life on every level. Its interpersonal focus includes a profound respect for individual differences and a resolute belief in the human potential for change. Phone 619-294-3190 |
